Laser Scar Removal
‘Effective, comfortable treatment for all types of scars’
Scar tissue forms as part of the natural healing process and over time the scar normally fades away. Unfortunately, some types of skin damage can cause some scars to become a cosmetic issue with an uneven surface, tone or colour.
How does Laser Scar Removal work?
A scar forms when the deep layers of the skin have been damaged and the body stimulates collagen production to close the wound. Scars can vary in size, shape and colour which means that there is no singular way to perform laser scar removal.
The main three types of scars are:
- Hypertrophic: scars that are raised above the skin. Severely raised scars are called keloid scars – these occur when the body produces too much collagen during the healing process.
- Atrophic: scars that are below the skin, most commonly caused by acne scarring or a deep cut.
- Stretch marks: these are tearing of the dermis, usually caused by fast growth, weight gain or pregnancy.
Generally speaking atrophic scars like those caused by acne are treated by stimulating collagen to fill any areas below the skin whereas hypertrophic scars would be treated in a number of different ways depending on the case.
Scarring caused by stretch marks is also treated with a laser to stimulate collagen to remodel the tissue and smooth out the scarring.
How many laser scar removal treatments would I need?
This will vary on a case by case basis – your treatment has to factor in skin type, genetics, along with the size, location and severity of the scar.
